Week In Review: First Games

It’s a new season, everyone is ready to hit the ice and put the pedal to the metal, itching to lay the first body check, score the first goal and make the first save.

Being nervous is all part of it, part of the firsts, the first game, the first penalty, the first of many.  The team stepped onto the ice for their first game versus Westside who we expected to be a very physical foe; they did not disappoint us in that regard.  The Warriors hit the ice ready to play in their second game of the season after tying Creighton Prep Blue one night earlier 2-2.  The boys from Westside started out physical and Elkhorn responded well, and drove to the net only 9 seconds in and buried their first goal of the night by Trevor LeGros assisted by Trent Bostwick.  The team did not stop there as they added two more goals before the first period was over with the two goals coming from David Farris with the assist going to Jeff Dolejs.  Westside was able to narrow the margin by netting one of their own late in the first period with a goal by Dustin Lopez assisted by Connor Randleman.

The Antlers didn’t stop there and added three more in the second and one in the third to take a commanding lead of their first game of the 2009 season.  Scoring in the second period were Brooks Coleman, Tim Cronin and Brad Peterson with the assists going to Peterson, and Dolejs.  The goal in the third was scored by Andrew Kousgaard with the helpers going to Ethan Workman and Zach Lau.

This was a good opening win for the team, the team game puck went to Trevor LeGros.

The second game of the week didn’t prove to be as kind to the Elkhorn team.  The boys came out on fire and hung with Millard North in the first 10 minutes, but after a few quick goals the team couldn’t recover.  Try as they may the guys could not muster any offense and failed to break the goose egg and lost their second game of the season to go 1-1.

This week Elkhorn plays Wednesday night at 7 pm vs. Lincoln East and then faces Lincoln in a rematch Saturday morning at 8 am in the league’s Fall Freeze.  Come out and support the team and make some noise.
