GIRL POWER!!

Most of the Lady Jr. Lancers started playing hockey for the same reason.

"My brother started playing hockey. I thought it was fun to play, so I wanted to start," Jr Lancer Milie said.

For a long time the only option for girls in the Metro was to join a boys team. Recently there was enough interest to form an all girls team.

"At first I wasn't too excited about the idea," Jr. Lancer Peyton said. "But once I got on the ice, I was like I am loving this, I am never going back to boys."

The girls say the quality is just as good as the boys leagues they used to play in.

"I think it is equally as physical because girls can get pretty dirty too. It is just as physical," Jr. Lancer Taylor said.

The girls league is gaining so much popularity here in Omaha that this is the first time they have been able to field two completely separate U-12 and U-16 teams. Next year they are hoping to add an U-19 year old squad.

"If you ask the girls, they just love to play the game. So if you get them involved at the ground level and you make it fun," Coach Jim Murcek said. "If you make it fun and they are having a good time they are usually stuck with the game for a long time."

This is the third year for most of the girls on the U-16 squad. In that short time the Lancer have gone from a start-up to one of the best teams in the Midwest.

"I was never one to stand out anywhere, but playing on a team like this that everyone gets to know about, it feels really good to have people recognize that girl power is awesome," Milie said.
